India’s rise as a superpower is inevitable: Vice President of India

Vice President of India, Mr Jagdeep Dhankhar presented the 14th AIMA Managing India Awards in New Delhi this evening.

The Vice President congratulated the awardees and the award jury and said that these awards enhance public perception and the success stories of the awardees inspire and motivate others.

He counted the many achievements of India in recent years but also reminded India’s business leaders of their profound responsibility to contribute the country’s marathon march to becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

He pointed out that the world is in the midst of extreme and severe change due to technological revolution, which offers both opportunities and challenges to Indian entrepreneurs. “India is in the frontline of nations in unleashing new technologies,” he said, adding that a new industrial revolution is coming from the transformative power of new technologies such as AI, quantum computing, hydrogen energy and 6G communication. 

The Vice President urged India’s business leaders to build skills for the new economy in the industrial workforce, as it will help the youth, which is currently obsessed with competitions for jobs.

He insisted that India is moving fast towards becoming a global superpower and its rise is inevitable. He pointed out that India has the world’s fastest growing large economy, fastest growing stockmarket, and fastest growing real estate market. He also pointed out that India has converted its vast population into a growth driver. “From being one of the ‘fragile five’ once, today India is the world’s 5th largest economy,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, AIMA President, Mr Nikhil Sawhney said

that the AIMA Managing India Awards have attained a special niche among business accolades in the country, as AIMA awards focus on country’s wellbeing and not just business achievements. He pointed out that this year’s award at a time, strong revival in India’s economic growth and escalation in risk to growth, which requires India’s leaders to show greater flexibility, agility and adaptability.

Introducing the award Ms Sunita Reddy, Senior Vice President, AIMA said, “Tonight we honour extraordinary individuals and institutions that are making exceptional contribution to strengthening India’s economy, polity and society. The winners of AIMA Managing India Awards are not just winners in their respective fields, they are standard bearers of excellence in leadership values and performance.” 

The winners of the 2024 Managing India Awards are as the following:

• Business Leader of the Year – Mr Sanjiv Puri, Chairman & Managing Director, ITC Limited

• Outstanding PSU of the Year – Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (collected by Mr C.B. Ananthakrishnan, Director Finance with additional charge of the office of Chairman and Managing Director)

• Entrepreneur of the Year – Mr Vivek Gupta & Mr Abhay Hanjura, Co-Founders, Licious

• Transformational Business Leader of the Year – Mr Gopal Vittal, Managing Director & CEO, Bharti Airtel Limited

• Lifetime Contribution Award – Onkar Kanwar, Chairman, Apollo Tyres Ltd

• Lifetime Contribution to Media – N Ram, Director, THG Publishing Private Limited and Former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu

• Emerging Business Leader of the Year - Ashish Bharat Ram, Chairman & Managing Director, SRF Limited

• Director of the Year – Karan Johar, Producer, Director, Talk Show Host and Entrepreneur

• Outstanding Institution Builder – Mr M B Parekh, Chairman, Pidilite Industries Ltd

• Indian MNC of the Year – Asian Paints Ltd (collected by Mr Manish Choksi, Non-Executive Vice Chairman)

 

The citations for the awards were read by celebrities from diverse fields. The citation readers included film maker Mr Muzaffar Ali, industrialist Mr Sanjay Kirloskar, Indian classical dancer Ms Sonal Mansingh, veteran journalist and media entrepreneur Mr Shekhar Gupta, Air India corporate affairs head Mr P Balaji, technology journalist and entrepreneur Mr Rajiv Makhni, KPMG India CEO Mr Yezdi Nagporewalla, and lifestyle & entertainment journalist Ms Sonal Kalra.

The jury for the 2024 Managing India Awards was chaired by Dr Sanjiv Goenka. The other members of the award jury were Mr Nikhil Sawhney, Ms Suneeta Reddy, Mr T V Narendran, Mr Shrinivas Dempo, Mr Sunil Kant Munjal, Mr Sanjay Kirloskar, Mr Harsh Pati Singhania, Mr Harshavardhan Neotia. Mr Rajive Kaul, Mr Sudhir Jalan, Mr Vineet Agarwal, Mr P Balaji, and Mr Yezdi Nagporewalla.

The awards presentation was followed by a performance by standup comic Mr Atul Khatri.

The awards ceremony was attended by distinguished leaders from the government, business, startups, arts, culture and entertainment. The event was livestreamed on AIMA’ social media channels.
