Workshop Overview

Sustainability is increasingly shaping managerial decisions—from sourcing and production to investment, innovation and stakeholder engagement. Managers must balance environmental and social responsibilities with commercial viability, often amid competing priorities, uncertain outcomes and resource constraints. These situations provide valuable opportunities for case-based learning in management education.

AIMA–India Case Research Centre (AIMA–ICRC), in collaboration with the WeSchool Centre of Excellence for Case Development (CECD), Bengaluru, proposes to organise a two-day Case Method and Case Writing Workshop on Sustainability on 19–20 November 2026. The workshop will strengthen participants’ understanding of the case method and develop their ability to translate organisational experiences into engaging, evidence-based teaching cases.

The programme will explore sustainability themes such as climate-related risks, sustainable supply chains, circular economy practices, social inclusion, responsible business and organisational resilience. Particular attention will be given to identifying managerial dilemmas, examining stakeholder perspectives and framing decisions that encourage critical thinking and classroom discussion.

Through conceptual sessions, case analysis, practical exercises, group discussions and expert feedback, participants will learn to move from describing an initiative to constructing a decision-oriented case. They will explore how to identify a protagonist, establish the decision context, develop a compelling narrative, incorporate organisational evidence and exhibits, and prepare an accompanying teaching note.

The workshop is intended to help faculty members, researchers, doctoral scholars and practitioners develop an initial case framework and a roadmap for further writing and refinement.

Workshop Objectives

Workshop Objectives

The workshop aims to enable participants to:

  1. Understand the case method: Examine how teaching cases support experiential learning, critical analysis and managerial decision-making.
  2. Identify sustainability-related case opportunities: Recognise organisational situations involving meaningful decisions, competing priorities and stakeholder interests.
  3. Frame a clear managerial dilemma: Define the protagonist, decision point, context and feasible alternatives around which a teaching case can be developed.
  4. Develop an evidence-based narrative: Organise interviews, organisational records, sustainability disclosures and other credible sources into a coherent case supported by relevant data and exhibits.
  5. Prepare an effective teaching note: Formulate learning objectives, discussion questions, analytical approaches and a classroom teaching plan.
  6. Apply ethical case-writing practices: Understand the importance of source attribution, informed consent, confidentiality and organisational permissions.
  7. Develop and refine an initial case framework: Apply workshop learning to a sustainability case idea and strengthen it through peer discussion and expert feedback.
