Workshop Background

The Case method teaching aims at creating this real-life situation in classroom and force student to analyze, plan and take actions. By applying the case method to business education, we break the boundaries of passive learning to encourage students to become active participants in their own progress. The information in the case stimulates educated conversation, concerning possible outcomes. Every case has a central discussion point, dilemma and angle. With each case, students empathize with a decision maker (“The protagonist”), analyze varied and frequently ambiguous data and assume responsibility for an action plan that effectively resolves the case’s business challenge.

Teaching through cases, have proved to be the most effective lifelong learning methodology. But finding a relevant, involving, thought provoking case is not easy. Also teaching a multidimensional, multidisciplinary case had its own challenges. The best solution can be developing your own cases. But finding an interesting and relevant topic, the pertinent information, setting the context and raising issues which stimulate discussion and above all writing a coherent focused and challenging case is not easy. To resolve some of these issues AIMA is organizing this workshop focused on DEVELOPING, WRITING and TEACHING through cases.

Key Focus Of The Workshop: Data Analytics and Diversity

Data Analytics and Diversity are two of the most discussed issues for management in companies.

The amount of data available to us is Overwhelming and Unprecedented. Obtaining, transforming and gaining valuable insights from this data is fast becoming the most valuable asset for most companies.

Case study in which the business user leverages data and the analytics system to derive insights to answer tangible business questions for decision making is the need of the day.

In one of the research projects by McKinsey on “Why diversity matters,” companies in the top quartile for gender or ethnic diversity are more likely to perform better financially. Case studies focusing on diversity are in demand in most of the renowned B-school across the world.

Format Of The Workshop

Using cases in the classroom is one of the most effective and enjoyable teaching methods for participants and the instructors. In this workshop the participants will typically be asked to undertake some preparation before the workshop. Learning will take place in group discussions, individual case presentations, and plenary discussions. AIMA limits the numbers of participants on each workshop to ensure that participants have an opportunity to explore individual concerns.

Learn To Write Cases

The ability to generate your own cases to use in the classroom can greatly enhance your impact and enjoyment as a teacher. This present workshop will also provide the opportunity for participants to understand the concept of cases development from teaching perspective. We believe during this workshop participants shall write field cases based on information provided and develop preliminary teaching notes for the case.

Learn To Teach Through Cases

This is an interactive workshop which will guide participants through the fundamentals of the case method teaching and case writing. This workshop aims to develop confidence and help teachers plan and select the best materials, approaches for their students or colleagues. Through a combination of theory, discussion and practical exercises, the workshop will provide insight into the dynamics of the case method, suggest tools and techniques for managing the process in the classroom, and consider the needs of groups of students.

Faculty Profile

  • Dr. Tuan Q. Phan is an Associate Professor in Marketing and Innovation & Information Management at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Director of the Representative Office of HKU in Vietnam, Associate Director of the Asia Case Research Centre, and founding and current President of Vietnam Association for Information Systems. His research interests in social networks, privacy, education, digital economies, mobility, and retailing uses large and population-size datasets to investigate consumer insights across disciplines using econometrics, social network analysis, machine learning, natural language processing, image analysis, artificial intelligence, GIS, simulations, game theory, and experimental methods. He received a doctorate from the Harvard Business School and undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

    Dr. Phan has published in top academic journals such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Information Systems Research (ISR), Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research (JMR), IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of the Association of Information Systems (JAIS) as well as leading cases through Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP) and the Asia Case Research Center (ACRC). He has also published several book chapters, and edited a book on information systems in Vietnam. Prior to HKU, he was at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Department of Information Systems & Analytics in the School of Computing, and in the Department of Analytics & Operations at the Business School where he received tenure. Dr. Phan was the research lead at the NUS Institute of Applied Learning Sciences and Educational Technology where he lead a team to conduct research on education. He has directly advised 6 PhD students, and a committee member for 11 students. Dr. Phan is also an entrepreneur, investor, expert witness to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, board member, and frequently consults industry leaders. He was also ranked in the top 10 in competitiveballroom dancing in North America.

  • Mr David S Lee, BFin(AMPB) Deputy Programme Director, BFin(AMPB) Admissions Tutor & Principal Lecturer agreed to teach a session using his recent HBR case David S. Lee is an award-winning teacher that is active broadly in the areas of ethics, fintech, leadership, law, and corporate governance. A recipient of multiple teaching excellence and teaching innovation awards, David is the first business academic to ever receive a UGC Teaching Award, the highest university teaching honor in Hong Kong. David feels teaching is a wonderful privilege and enjoys being in the classroom and engaging with students. He teaches in the undergraduate, executive education, MBA, and other taught postgraduate degree programs, including the IMBA with Fudan University, and the Executive MBA-Global Asia offered with Columbia Business School and London Business School.
    He develops case studies and teaching materials in the areas of corporate governance, decision-making, ethics, fintech, and leadership. He has received funding to explore how technology can be used to develop pedagogy and enhance learning. Combining his interests in ethics, finance, technology, and teaching, David is a co-instructor, along with his colleague, David Bishop, for a first of its kind massive open online course (MOOC) titled, FinTech Ethics and Risks, hosted by edX. David is a co-author of the first Asia focused business ethics textbook, Business Ethics: Ethical Decision Making and Cases, An Asia Edition (Cengage Learning Asia, 2019). His commentary and writing regularly appear in print and broadcast media and have been featured in the Harvard Business Review, Arirang TV, Handelsblatt, the Nikkei Asian Review, NK News (a North Korea focused specialist news provider), The Korea Times, TRT World, and the South China Morning Post. Prior to joining the University of Hong Kong, David worked in investment management. He started his career at Goldman Sachs and also has experience as a lawyer, in management consulting, and working with entrepreneurial ventures. David earned his J.D. from UCLA School of Law, his M.Sc. (with Merit) in Organisational and Social Psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, his M.A. in East Asian Studies from Harvard University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Philosophy from Cambridge, and his B.A., cum laude, in International Politics and Asian Studies from Brigham Young University. David is a lawyer, a CAIA (Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst) charterholder, and a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

  • Jeroen Van Den Berg, Assistant Director, Asia Case Research Centre, Lecturer, Management and Strategy, HKU Business School
    Jeroen has been working in case development for nearly 17 years. Six years at HKUST Business School and 11 years at The Asia Case Research Centre of HKU Business School where he is the assistant director managing the Centre’s day-to-day affairs. He also lectures part-time for the business school’s Department of Management and Strategy. Prior to his career in academia he worked for 10 years in a variety of roles ranging from medical publishing to wealth management. Jeroen has written numerous cases in strategy, finance and law. He led the development of over 400 case studies from inception to publication. For the development of case studies, he has collaborated closely with Asia's business community as well as academics across the globe. He regularly teaches case writing workshops and has written a book with Fudan University press titled: "Dealing with case studies: A practical guide to understanding, preparing, writing and presenting business case studies".
    Jeroen has a BSc and MSc degree in Business Economics from The University of Amsterdam and an LLM in Corporate and Financial Law from The University of Hong Kong.

  • Angela YIN, Research Centres & Institutes – Asia Case Research Centre, HKU Business School Angela is a Senior Manager at Asia Case Research Centre (“ACRC”), HKU Business School. She spearheads the case writing about companies and organizations in China and across Asia. She plays an important role in the development and management of relations with internal and external stakeholders including business partners, distribution partners and faculty members. She is responsible for the case development process, from the identification of faculty needs, to the sourcing of case companies and the editing and publication of case studies.
    Angela has rich experiences in marketing and management consulting. Before joining HKU Business, she worked in tertiary institutions including Ivey Business School and City University of Hong Kong, corporates including Microsoft and Dell, as well as professional service firm of Arthur Andersen.
    Angela received her Bachelor of Economics degree from Fudan University, China and Master of Business Administration degree from Ivey Business School, The University of Western Ontario, Canada.

  • Dr Indranil Bose, Distinguished Professor and Head of the Area of Excellence in AI, Data Science and Business NEOMA, Business School, Paris
    Indranil Bose is Distinguished Professor and Head of the Area of Excellence in AI, Data Science and Business at NEOMA Business School. Dr. Bose is a globally renowned expert in Information Systems and has extensive teaching, research, and consulting experience in business analytics, Big Data, information security, financial technologies, and digital transformation. His degrees include BTech from IIT Kharagpur, MS from the University of Iowa, and MS and PhD from Purdue University. He has been a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, University of Hong Kong, University of Florida, and the University of Texas at Arlington. He has published in MIS Quarterly, Journal of the MIS, Decision Support Systems, European Journal of Operational Research, Information & Management, International Journal of Production Economics, etc. He is the winner of the EFMD 2017 case competition and has authored several teaching cases published by Harvard Business Publishing. He was ranked as the 29th most productive researcher in the world for publications in top-tier journals in Information Systems (2005-2014). He serves as Senior Editor of Decision Support Systems and Pacific Asia Journal of the AIS, and Associate Editor of Information & Management, Journal of the AIS, and Communications of the AIS.

  • Dr. Gita Bajaj, Professor of HR & Communication Chairperson PGDM, DCP, IMT Business School, Dubai
    Dr. Gita Bajaj is a Professor of HR and Communication at IMT Dubai, an adjunct faculty at ie School of Human Sciences, Madrid, Spain and Visiting Faculty at IIM Sambalpur, India. She is a Harvard Business School Affiliate, a certified NLP practitioner, and a certified Innermetrix Coach. She has 17 years of academic experience preceded by 13 years of industry experience. She is an avid Case writer and received the national award (India) for best Case by Ivey-ISB Case Publishing in 2010; Aleem Business Congress Best Case Researcher Award 2017. In 2018, one of her cases was nominated by Richard Ivey for EFMD Case Competition, best ADV profiling Innermetrix profiling Award in 2018, best research paper Award by IRSSM 2021. She has co-edited one book, authored/ co-authored 20 Cases and research papers and more than 200 newspaper articles. She teaches Case writing to doctoral scholars – has developed a host of case writers as Case Faculty at MDI, Gurgaon, IIM Sambalpur and through AIMA ICRC. She is also a reviewer with many Scopus-indexed Journals. Dr Bajaj’s research interest areas include Cross-Cultural Management, Crisis Management, Sustainable Development & Entrepreneurship and Learning & Development. She is a member Board of Studies AIMA-CME, and member Editorial Board India Case Research Centre. Throughout her career, she took up many leadership roles and has contributed to institution building. She was the founder editor of HT Horizons and HT Careers (Hindustan Times), and is currently a columnist with The Khaleej Times.   • Dr Charles Dhanaraj, Evelyn & Jay G. Piccinati Endowed Chair Professor of Strategic Management University of Denver - Daniels College of Business , United States
    Charles Dhanaraj is Evelyn & Jay G. Piccinati Endowed Chair in Teaching Excellence, professor, and chair of the Department of Management at the Daniels College of Business, University of Denver. Dhanaraj comes from Temple University, where he was the H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest Professor of Strategy at Fox School of Business, executive director of the Executive Doctorate in Business Administration (EDBA) Program, and the founding director of the Translational Research Center, Dhanaraj has previously served at IMD Switzerland, Indiana University Kelley School of Business, Western University Ivey Business School (Canada) and Temasek Polytechnic (Singapore). He has also been a visiting Professor at the Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), Indian School of Business (India), Foundation Dom Cabral (Brazil) and Kellogg School of Management (U.S.A.). Dhanaraj’s research focuses on strategy and leadership in a global context and explores three questions:
    • How do leaders craft and execute winning strategies that are purpose driven?
    • How do organizations create sustained value from global partnerships? and
    • How do entrepreneurs and business leaders orchestrate global networks for growth?

He has also written over 50 teaching cases, several of which have received international awards.
    Dhanaraj serves on the editorial boards of several major academic journals. He has served as a deputy editor at Cross Cultural Strategic Management and a guest editor at Leadership Quarterly and Management International Review. In 2017 he was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of International Business (AIB), a distinction held by elite researchers for outstanding contributions to scholarly development in international business.
    Dhanaraj has taught across the programs—undergraduate, MBA, Executive MBA, PhD, and Executive PhDs. He has worked with several global organizations such as Eli Lilly, Sanofi, Cummins, Danske Bank, Agricultural Bank of China, Saudi Arabia British Bank (SABB), UniCredit, Pernod Ricard, Maersk Drilling, Arla, Dekra, Valmet, Deloitte, Sika, Hilti, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Aditya Birla Group.
    An engineer from IIT Madras (India), with master’s degrees in robotics engineering and business, Charles earned his PhD in business from Ivey Business School, Canada. Prior to entering academia, Dhanaraj worked with the Tata group for several years specializing in strategic management and advanced manufacturing.

  • Dr Rajan Saxena , Chairman, AIMA-India Case Research Centre, Former Vice Chancellor, SVKM’s NMIMS University, Mumbai
    Rajan Saxena is an Indian management expert, academic, writer and the Vice-Chancellor of the SVKM's NMIMS, a deemed university in Mumbai. He is a former Director of Indian Institute of Management, Indore, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research and ICFAI Business School, Gurgaon. He is also a recipient of the BERG Education Award for 2014.
    Rajan did his college studies at Shri Ram College of Commerce of the Delhi University and secured a doctoral degree (PhD) from the Delhi School of Economics to start his career as a member of faculty at XLRI - Xavier School of Management. Later, he served as the director of S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research and ICFAI Business School, Gurgaon. When the Indian Institute of Management, Indore was established in 1996, Saxena was appointed as its founder director. In July 2003, he resigned from the post, allegedly due to the appointment of an enquiry committee into the fiscal management of the institution by the Board of Governors. Five years later, he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of SVKM's NMIMS, Mumbai, a post he retains, having been appointed for a second term in 2014. Rajan is an elected Fellow and life member of the Indian Society for Training & Development (ISTD) and a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants of India (IMCI).He is a recipient of many honours such as Dr. Suresh Ghai Memorial Award (2013), DNA Hall of Fame Award and ET Now Visionary Leadership Award (2013). and he received the BERG Education Award in 2014.

    Dr Anuja Pandey is working with All India Management Association (AIMA) as Professor Marketing, Programme Director Post Graduate Certificate in Management. She is Head of AIMA- India Case Research Centre (ICRC). ICRC was set up at AIMA in 2018 to promote India centric case development. She is also certified Case Method Teaching from Harvard. Dr Anuja is Managing Editor of AIMA's Journal of Management & Research (AJMR). Dr Pandey is faculty in-charge of AIMA's courses in Business Analytics and Digital Marketing & Analytics. Dr Anuja's teaching experience is in the area of Marketing Management, Consumer Behavior, Advertising and Brand Management, Digital Marketing, Sales and Distribution, Marketing Research, Services Marketing, International Marketing, Communication.   • Dr Raj Agarwal , Director, Centre for Management Education, AIMA
    Currently, Dr. Raj Agrawal is Professor and Director of All India Management Association, Centre for Management Education (AIMA CME). Before joining AIMA CME Dr. Agrawal was Professor and Director of IILM Academy of Higher Learning, Greater Noida. He is also a “Visiting Research Professor” in Montana State University, Billings, United States (US). He has more than thirty five years of academic experience of working in prestigious national institutions like; All India Management Association (AIMA), Association of Indian Universities, Motilal Regional Engineering College and other national institutes. He is also actively associated with statutory bodies like; All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), NAAC and National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
    Dr. Agrawal has done PhD from Allahabad University. A prolific writer and keen researcher, he has written more than seventy articles in leading national and international journals.
