Applications are invited for the High-end workshop, KARYASHALA on ‘Building the Foundations of Management Research: A Capacity Building Workshop for Doctoral Students’

Workshop Duration: 22nd August to 28th August 2022

Eligibility criteria for Participants

The proposed workshop is meant to support motivated doctoral students, who have a strong willingness excel in their research pursuits in management and related fields.

The applicants must produce a letter of authentication from their Supervisor/Head of the Department/Head of the Institute indicating their association with the institute and ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC) for allowing their student to undergo training in the workshop, if selected. There is no dedicated format for the same; however, it must be obtained on the institute/university letter head.

The course will be completely free of cost for the shortlisted participants.

The maximum number of participants is limited to 25.

All the selected participants will be given accommodation with catering facilities during the workshop.

The participants will be eligible for TA reimbursement (Train 3rd AC/Sleeper class/Bus fare) for their journey to the host institute from their home institute, both ways, as per the GOI norms. (Ticket/Fare copy submission must)

Applicants must be fully vaccinated (with two doses) against COVID 19. (Certificate verification for shortlisted candidates)

Workshop Description

This workshop is primarily aimed for doctoral students in the field of management, broadly defined. The purpose of this workshop is to offer resources that will help the PhD students in the logic and philosophy of conducting research in Management and related fields. The topics that will be taken up for discussion during the workshop will include What is Good Theory, What is a Good Empirical Test, and The Merits of Different Approaches to Research.

By the time this workshop is complete, the doctoral students will be able to:

1.   Understand the basic philosophical underpinnings of the scientific method (2 Sessions)
2.   Understand how the social sciences interface with other sciences (1 Session)
3.   Develop academic writing skills (2 Sessions)
4.   Write a good journal abstract (1 Session)
5.   Select an appropriate journal for publication (1 Session)
6.   Know about software tools for citing references and preparing bibliography (1 Session)
7.   Write a critical literature review (as opposed to a descriptive one) (2 Sessions)
8.   Develop research proposal writing skills (2 Sessions)
9.   Know how to bag grants for the research projects (1 Session)
10. Distinguish between the characteristics of valid and invalid critiques of research (1 Session)
11. Know the differences between defending the findings of research to fellow academics, business leaders, and policy makers (1 Session)
12. Understand the Basic Research Tools and Methods (4 Sessions)
13. Know about Advanced Research Tools & Methods (8 Sessions)
14. Know about emerging area of research in Management and related fields (1 Session)

The workshop sessions will be engaged by a pool of widely acclaimed researchers and doctoral educators in the field of Management.
